Spray-on Liquid Glass that Can Cover Any Surface

this post is created by aisha

Invented in Turkey and patented by Nanopool, a German company, the spray-on liquid glass might become one of the most useful inventions in the field of nanotechnology. The product was tested at the Saarbrücken Institute for New Materials. Currently the representatives of the German company are in UK negotiating with several firms and the National Health Service on the widespread use of the liquid glass.
It is worth mentioning that the invention is transparent and non-toxic. The liquid glass can protect any type of surface from damages caused by water, UV radiation, dirt, heat, and bacterial infections. Besides, it is flexible and breathable, which means that the liquid glass can be applied on plants and seeds as well. The invention was tested in vineyards where researchers found that the spray considerably increases the resistance of plants to fungal diseases. The trials also showed that the sprayed seeds grew faster.
The main ingredient used in the liquid glass is silicon dioxide that is obtained from quartz sand. Depending on the type of surface that is to be covered, researchers can add water or ethanol to the spray. Scientists say that their latest invention boasts a long-lasting anti-bacterial effect. The spray produces a coating that is just 100nm thick. This coating can be easily cleaned using water or a damp cloth.
According to Neil McClelland, UK project manager with Nanopool, due to its capabilities, the spray-on liquid glass can become of the most useful inventions around the world, ending up being used by a lot of industries that will cover their products. Currently the invention is being used by a train company and a hotel chain in the UK, as well as a hamburger chain in Germany that are carrying out tests of the liquid glass for various uses.
The spray-on liquid glass was also tested in a Lancashire hospital, where it showed "very promising" results, being used to cover equipment, medical implants, catheters, sutures and bandages. The invention could be also used on clothing, because it cannot be seen by the naked eye, thus clothes could become stain resistant. Due to its unique properties, the liquid glass can be used to cover bathrooms, tiles, sinks and many other surfaces in the home. According to the researchers, the spay-on glass can last for a year. It is expected to hit the DIY stores across Britain at a price of GBP5 ($8).

Japan's largest WiFi maker signs up for latest WiFi technology

this post is created by aisha

  • Japan's largest WiFi equipment manufacturer signs up for Ericsson's WiFi patents
  • Ericsson holds industry strongest patent portfolio in GSM/HSPA/LTE
  • Ericsson also holds essential WiFi patents
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), the leading patent holder in mobile telecommunications, has signed an agreement to license its patented WiFi technology to Melco Holdings, parent company of Japanese digital equipment manufacturer Buffalo. Buffalo is the largest WiFi manufacturer in Japan with a market share of about 60%.
Ericsson holds the industry's strongest patent portfolio covering technologies like GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA and LTE.
Ericsson's early research on GPRS and HIPERLAN/2 has been the basis of packet technology for later mobile standards such as HSPA, and more recently the latest WiFi standard, IEEE 802.11n.  As a result, Ericsson holds essential patents that are key to developing products in a wide range of mobile technologies, including WiFi.
More and more people use heavy data applications like HD video and gaming wirelessly at home, on their laptops and set top boxes.  Since many homes are connected to fiber optic networks, the bottleneck of data streaming is now in the wireless link, between the fiber and the devices like TV and laptops. The latest high capacity WiFi standard, IEEE 802.11n, provides a solution to this problem by offering significantly greater download speed. It enables several users to simultaneously access heavy data applications with high quality over the same wireless link.

Latest 802.11 Standard Boosts Wi-Fi Power in New Band

this post is created by aisha

The nearly finished IEEE 802.11y could make Wi-Fi more practical over longer distances: Wi-Fi is a compromise. In the unlicensed bands in which it operates, it has to deal with interference from noise sources and other networks, while using very low power, and trying not to make a pest of itself. It's done very well. In the 2.4 GHz band and parts of 5 GHz, the maximum power from the radio is 1 watt (W), and the effective power (EIRP) is 4 W on an omnidirectional antenna. (You can push far more power if you narrow the antenna's beam. And parts of the 5 GHz band restrict radio power below 1 W. I wrote a long rundown of 5 GHz issues back in Jan-2007.)
But there's this lovely new segment of lightly licensed spectrum in the U.S., the 3.65 GHz band. It's a non-exclusive licensed band available only in parts of the country that don't have pre-existing ground-to-satellite or radar uses that overlap. This omits most of the eastern seaboard and most major cities; Seattle is one exception.
The licensing mechanism allows any number of operators to obtain inexpensive licenses, and register the base stations they use by location. If interference arises among base stations, operators are required to work out the problems themselves. I wrote extensively about this band and its rules on 9-May-2008 in profiling Azulstar, formerly a metro-scale Wi-Fi firm, but now a big proponent of WiMax in 3.65 GHz. I also went over the rules for the band on 11-June-2007 when the FCC announced the arrangement.
Several firms offer base station and customer premises equipment for this band now, so close to the 3.5 GHz band more commonly exclusively licensed in Europe and elsewhere. WiMax equipment is available because the 3.65 GHz band can be used with WiMax without any modifications to that protocol, although limited to just 25 MHz of the 50 MHz that the FCC set aside.
Equipment that conforms to a more stringent set of rules about contention and other factors can use the whole 50 MHz, and that's where 802.11y comes in. It's an extension of Wi-Fi to cope with the specific needs--and to open Wi-Fi technology up to 20 W EIRP, a vastly higher power output. This could allow connections over 5 km, the group says.
The Wikipedia entry on 802.11y, clearly written by someone involved with the specification, notes that three specific additions are needed: a tweak to support the way in which the FCC wants contention among competing devices to work; a method for an access point to tell a station (a connecting radio) that it's about to switch its channel or its channel's bandwidth, and the station should do likewise; and a mechanism to handle a base station allowing or revoking permission to use the spectrum without uniquely identifying the user's system or broadcasting its precise GPS-based location.
The standard is near completion and initial approval. I don't have any knowledge about whether any mainstream Wi-Fi equipment makers or metro-scale equipment makers are looking into building 802.11y into their gear.
The fact is that this could be a great technology for the mostly sub-metropolitan markets that 3.65 GHz is available in, although it has the same pain as WiMax: all new gear on the towers and all new adapters for customers.

Philips latest Android device is the GoGear Connect PMP / PND

this post is created by aisha

Philips certainly isn’t being shy this week about taking aim at the PMP and PND markets. Hot on the heels of their announcement of the Philips GoGear Muse MP4 player comes word of the GoGear Connect, an Android 2.1 powered PMP and PND rolled up into one gorgeous device replete with both a touchscreen and, more curiously, a trackball.
This isn’t a smartphone, so don’t expect 3G connectivity here, but Philips is still playing up the GoGear Connect’s online functionality, which will allow it to tether to your computer through Bluetooth or connect to any 802.11n WiFi hotspot in range.
Otherwise, the GoGear Connect will fully support VoIP, and ships with both a speaker and a microphone built-into the device, so you should be able to use this as a Skype phone, or with whatever video chat service you use. Additionally, the GoGear Connect ships with a GPS unit, allowing it to function as a sat-nav handheld.
As for the display, it’s a pretty paltry 3.2-inch affair at 320 x 480 resolution, but it does at least feature haptic feedback for chunkier touchscreen clicks. Other specs include a memory card slot for expandable storage, a rear-facing camera of unknown resolution and internal storage ranging between 8GB and 64GB.
Otherwise, the only thing to note about Philips’ GoGear Connect is the custom UI, which Philips seems to be slapping on all of their Android-powered devices. No specific price or release date is known, but Philips is making vague reference to a Q3 ship date…. at which point, this player will already be old news.

LG unveils new Xnote Ultralight CULV notebook, then accidentally reveals HDTV plans for 2010

this post is created by aisha

The sexy little laptop you see above is South Korean manufacturer LG’s latest tantalizing notebook on offer: the XNote Ultralight. It looks gorgeous.
What we’re looking at is an 11.6-inch ultraportable, running on a CULV battery but with the upgrade to go full Core2 Duo available. Otherwise, it ships with 2GB of RAM, a 320GB or 500GB hard drive, a couple of USB 2.0 ports and 802.11-n WiFi connectivity. The LG Xnote Ultralight starts around $1000 USD, but it’s Korea-only right now, so if you’re interested in this Windows 7 based machine, you’ll need to import for the time being.
It’s not exactly a laptop I’m tempted to buy, but I do find it an attractively designed machine. Unfortunately, the specs and the price make this not particularly competitive with most netbooks which cost half as much.
In other LG news, the Korean manufacturers accidentally leaked a Google Docs spreadsheet explaining their display plans for the year. The displays they showcased at CES are coming out next month, along with their new 3D-line up compatible with 3D Blu-Ray in May.
LG is also looking to roll-out their Skype-capable HDTVs, as well as their own webcam accessory in the coming months. The spreadsheet also references the forthcoming 47-inch LEX8 and LEX9 models, which are only a quarter of an inch thick.
It’s not earth shaking news, surely, but LG does great work on their HDTV line-up, and with semi-official word that new models are coming, that’s reason enough to consider delaying your next television purchase accordingly… especially if you have visions of a 3D Avatar home theater experience in your future.

Things Looking Up For 2010 Electronic Parts Sales

this post is created by aisha

The end of the year 2009 means that we can so far been labeled the worst recession since the Great Depression behind us and look forward to better things in 2010. 2009 will be remembered as the year of the world on its head got turned around economically opened everyone’s eyes and shows us that the world economy is as fragile as ever, perhaps even more from globalization.

The electronics industry has been particularly hard hit with the consumers do not spend their hard earned money on electronic devices that have a domino effect through the production of the causes and the supply chain. The electronic sales for 2009 were expected to fall to ten percent. This doesn’t seem a lot, however, expect global sales sheets on $ 1.38 trillion U.S. dollars, in turn, a deposit of $ 138 billion U.S. dollars. Figures like these have a major impact on sales. The semiconductor industry expects only a 23% decline in worldwide sales to about $ 200 billion U.S. dollars. Includes a similar direction of the passive components market, resistors, capacitors and inductors, is a look at 18% decline in sales to 20 billion U.S. dollars.

With the economic downturn, electronic parts and component suppliers need to rethink their business strategies and to be are now concentrating on its core business in a position to weather the economic storm. There was also an important time in quality assurance and quality control processes to invest. As a result of the Electronic Part Catalog downturn, it was easier for the manufacturers of substandard and counterfeit parts of its dangerous product on the market and in electronic devices. It has become easier for these illegal manufacturers and suppliers are looking for cheaper products and shorter lead suppliers. This is why many established e-suppliers have a lot of investment and time into their quality control methods and processes to ensure they deliver top-quality products to market and protect their customers from dangerous substandard and counterfeit parts.

Apart With all the economic doom and gloom, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and revenue expectations are expected to improve towards the end of the fourth quarter of 2009 and even more in 2010. With the return will begin consumer confidence, sales of electronic equipment and increase the production and kick and electronic parts and components supply chains and help in economic recovery, we hope to see in 2010.

Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005HA-PU17-BK Review

this post is created by aisha

Is the Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005HA-PU17-BK for you if?
Let the address of the few major differences at the front. This machine sells for $ 399 at the moment, but you can expect it to be cheaper in the end than the $ 499 1008HA-PU17-BK. The reason? The Asus Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK Seashell not try to sneak their way into a brown envelope – it is a bit thicker.
This is mainly because it has the Asus Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK Seashell the VGA connector on the back page instead of the refined space-saving dongle, the slimmed 1008HA. Also gone: the little flaps for all, the “Sprout ugly” ports around the machine. The fashion-conscious computer users may still prefer the lines 1008HA, but in all other aspects of the 1005HA is doing his best to remain essentially the same machine.

The other major Changeup from 1008HA: a six-cell battery, with which you are guaranteed a long enough battery life. In our lab tests we have found that hanging the machine for 8 hours, 11 minutes. Not too shabby – even for a long journey.

According to the glossy black Asus Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK Seashell the outside – that is certain to all sorts of unwanted spots to win – are current netbook offal and the standard loading ports. You need to know ‘em by heart at this time, you expect me, an Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi run the show. How does it do this? It falls directly into the zone for netbooks. Scoring a little on the high side, it ranks 38 in PC WorldBench tests (on average still hovers around 35). Thus it appears that you are full of your basic office documents and web surfing needs met.
Lining the outside of the Asus Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK Seashell, the usual retinue of connection options: an Ethernet connection, three USB ports, an SD card reader, and headphone and microphone. There is nothing shocking.

The keyboard is 92 percent full-size, with a good layout, and it feels great and comfortable. The keys are firm and large enough to easily Art Even the metallic mouse button bar is pretty safe – and we especially like the treatment Asus’ of the touchpad.

Rather than trim with dainty or any other material to indicate that it contains within the strike zone is, this model, the small bumps as 1008. The only difference is, the Asus Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK Seashell chooses down the Divots, it is a bit weaker when touched. And for some it might be a hair tougher demanding, where the touch pad ends and the palm rest. No big deal – just a personal preference thing.

As for the 10.1in screen, it looks so clear and crisp in its native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels resolution. (You can set higher standards in an emulated mode.) Pop-color display if the slope at just the right angle – as with most laptops and netbooks. Also, as a rule, the screen is the glossy coating, you can squint when you try to see him in broad daylight.

The other major features in the game, here in the form of power will change mode (accessible via the function key and tap the spacebar) and a software suite that sits on your desktop. The software suite consists of an Asus download store (a portal for free apps would be handy) and access to a free 10 GB online storage, and synchronization of data and rapid applets to general users, increase the font sizes or colors quickly To calibrate a focused image.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BK Review

this post is created by aisha

Asus is known for its exclusive Eee PC and this new Eee PC 1005PE-PU17-BK known is the latest addition to its netbook lineup. It is the latest Intel Atom N450 processor and is on its previous successful notebook Seashell 1005HA that we reviewed previously built. The new processor makes the device to run 14 hours, as modified on the data sheet of the netbook. Let us some other details of the device and decide whether it is not worth a buy or.

Performance
The new Intel Atom N450 is a powerful animal, but in almost the same processing capacity as the joint N270 or N280 processor. But the difference is because it uses the Intel GMA 3150 graphics, while the older Atom 280 processors with the Intel GMA 950 graphics card has been inserted. The system is a little bit better position, things like HD video, or an occasional meeting or vision, etc. Do not try to handle a high def 3-D game play in this unit or you are destined for disappointment. The 1 GB SDRAM is good enough for normal everyday tasks, and the 250 GB hard drive is enough for all your favorite music and videos and all the others, what to save.

Display
The display is a standard 1024 X 600 pixel display measuring 10.1 inches diagonally. The screen is a bright one, a very good brightness and contrast is with live colors, but, as usual, it suffers from reflections and glare in bright light conditions. When it comes to viewing angle of the display, I would say that the vertical viewing angles are fairly average, and the horizontal ones just a little bit better. You do not need to worry about, as you will not see an HD movie in this netbook with a few friends.
Audio
We were impressed with the sound quality, however, especially considering the average quality of the budget netbook speakers. The speakers sounded very good, even at high volume without distortion. The high and midrange sound was very good and it is obviously not a bass without a separate subwoofer, do not hear about the 1005PE-PU17-BK. A good headset for the music lovers, as always, is recommended.

Ports
It has VGA out, USB port, Security lock slot and power jack on the left side and a 4 – in – 1 card reader, headphone and microphone jack and two more USB port and an Ethernet connector needed at the right side. It is not missing any important slot but not yet advanced connections such as Firewire or HDMI port. But the port selection should be more than enough for normal use.
Battery
The new processor is the biggest advantage of better battery life. In our tests, we have a large 12-hour period with little or no use of our will to break all previous records. With the heavy workload, you can expect 1005PE-PU17-BK to run at least 8 hours, this is not a joke by all means.

Conclusion
If you want an animal power, this is not the laptop for you, but if you have a sleep mode, there is no better laptop than this. With its stellar battery life and good overall properties and the build quality is definitely a good laptop for those who will use it for normal everyday use of energy sources for quite some time

Canon PowerShot S3 IS 6 MP Digital Camera with 12x Image Stabilized Optical Zoom

this post is created by aisha

An Improvement Over the Canon S2 IS?
A replacement for the last year’s hugely successful Canon PowerShot S2 IS, the Canon PowerShot S3 IS is a digital camera with optical image stabilization, 12x zoom, 6 Megapixels vs. 5MP, 2-inch LCD vs. 1.8-inch. The camera has a focus assist light to aid low-light focusing and features improved DIGIC II processor - the same generation that is used in new Canon digital SLR cameras like Canon 20D or Digital Rebel XT (350D).
Just as the S2 IS, the S3 IS has articulated LCD, uses 4 AA batteries and stores photos on SD memory cards. But it adds ISO 800 mode.
The monster 12x optical zoom and optical image stabilization work together to give you sharp pictures when shooting handheld and/or at long distances. Only a handful of digital cameras have 12x optical zoom and even less have optical image stabilization that makes 12x optical zoom usable without introducing blurriness when shooting handheld. In addition to Canon S3 IS and S2 IS, I can mention Panasonic DMC-FZ5, FZ4, FZ20, FZ30 and FZ7.
The Canon S2 IS was an impressive and very popular camera. The only things I did not like about it were its use of 4 AA batteries, the fact that the filter adaptors were sold separately, whereas Panasonic FZ cameras came with them and the flimsy lens cap, as well as the fact that the flash had to be raised manually (unlike Panasonic cameras where you could just push a button).
The S3 has not improved in the areas I criticized, but did improve in the area of resolution, LCD size, ISO range. But do the improvements warrant a $100 difference in price with the S2 IS?

Features
The S3 IS lets you shoot at the following resolutions of up to 6 Megapixels and lets you print enlargements or crop the part of the picture and print it with excellent results. And, of course, it is more than enough for the standard 6×4 prints.
The camera features selectable ISO between 80, 100, 200, 400 and 800 as well as Auto. It also has manual focus (with focus bracketing) in addition to automatic 1-spot focus (the focus spot in auto mode can be moved to any position on the screen by using [SET] and arrow buttons).
The camera has an autofocus assist light for better and faster focusing in low-light conditions. It works well in dim light.

Movie Mode
The camera has a built-in stereo microphone for recording sounds while filming video clips and a speaker, which can be used for operational sounds or to play back the sounds recorded. The camera can record AVI movie clips at up to 640×480 pixels at 30 or 15 fps with stereo sound.

LCD and Viewfinder
The camera has a fully articulated 2-inch LCD with 115,000 pixels that covers 100% of the view. The LCD requires quite a lot of force to flip outward or rotate, but feels sturdy as a result.
In addition to the LCD, there is an electronic viewfinder (EVF). Since it is difficult (and expensive) to make a 12x zooming optical viewfinder and impossible to easily confirm focus in a non-SLR optical viewfinder, the Canon S2 IS has an EVF.
Both the LCD and EVF are fluid, has pleasing colors and good resolution. Both are fluid, even in low light.
I found that the LCD is well-visible in regular conditions, but in sunlight, visibility decreases and you have to use the EVF, which works well in sunlight. The EVF by default is slightly dim.

Picture Quality
The camera produces excellent pictures, although some of them were slightly overexposed. They are richly saturated, sharp from wide angle to telephoto and have pleasing colors. I really like the sky colors and the way the camera renders clouds.
The image stabilization worked well and let me take handheld photos at full telephoto at 1/100 and sometimes at slower speeds. I also could take handheld photos at 1/10 (and slower) at wide angle. This is much better than the rule of the recommended handheld shutter speeds (1/equivalent focal length) suggests. Without image stabilization I wouldn’t be able to take pictures at the above shutter speeds. 1/500 at telephoto and 1/50 at wide angle would be the slowest I could use.
I mostly used the lowest ISO available (ISO 80) and saw no noise. At higher ISO settings, the noise starts to appear. At ISO 200, you can see noise appear in the shadows/darker areas and ISO 400 has quite detectable noise, the ISO 800 features even worse noise. Fortunately, you can avoid having to use it in most situations by simply using a slower shutter speed and/or larger apertures (e.g. F2.7 at wide angle). Image stabilization lets you use those slower speeds handheld without fear of motion blur appearing on your pictures.
But if you have to have a faster shutter speed, then you have to use ISO 400-800. Surprisingly, the noise at ISO 800 is not as bad as I expected and ISO 800 photos can be printed at 4×6 size.
The lens of the S3 exhibits very slight barrel distortion and no noticeable pincushion distortion at telephoto. There is chromatic aberration (CA) to be found in high-contrast scenes, especially at the telephoto end of the zoom. This is despite the UD element in the lens. As is usually the case with mega-zoom cameras, the telephoto shots have slightly soft corners, but nothing major.

Sigma DP2 test pictures from Las Vegas

this post is created by aisha

In addition to the many interviews, attending various lectures, and receiving the information about (upcoming) product introductions, I went out to take photos with several new digital cameras. One of which is the Sigma DP2 compact camera, and although not a final production model, we are already able to provide you with a number of test photos which were made in Las Vegas with the Sigma DP2. The Sigma DP2 digital camera was first mentioned during the Photokina 2008. At that time, the process of the development of the Sigma DP2 camera was announced. This time, however, during the PMA 2009, it has become clear that Sigma is ready to launch the Sigma DP2 and deliver the new camera to its distributors.

Sigma DP2 digital compact camera
The Sigma DP2 features a 14 Megapixel FOVEON X3 image sensor (2652x1769x3) which is also found in the Sigma DLSR camera. The Sigma DP1 (View : Sigma DP1 test photos) was the first compact camera using a FOVEON sensor, whilst the Sigma DP2 (View : Sigma DP2 features) is the latest generation equipped with a 41mm f/2.8 high quality lens. Two aspherical glass lenses offer superior quality. The Super Multi-Layer Coating of the lens reduces flare in the lens caused by sunshine or light and ghosting. In combination with the 14 Megapixel FOVEON X3 image sensor, this lens provides a natural superficial depth of field with an attractive bokeh effect.

Sigma photo gallery: DP2 in action
The status of this Sigma DP2 camera is not yet final. I took the sample pictures in RAW format and converted them to JPEG images through the special Sigma software. The photos show the reproduction ability of the Sigma DP2 at this moment, but we have to emphasize that the camera is not yet a final production model. The firmware will still undergo some adjustments, and settings that I found in this early sample will also still be fine-tuned.

Sigma DP2 photo gallery
The Sigma DP2 test photos were taken with a pre-production camera, which means that this Sigma DP2 camera is not yet equal to the model that the consumer can expect to purchase. Additionally, the Sigma DP2 will also be thoroughly tested in our DIWA test lab. As soon as a Sigma DP2 evaluation sample becomes available, we will carry out a full test in practice with the DP2. The Sigma DP2 photos in this article were taken during the PMA 2009 in Las Vegas.

Samsung NX10 DSLR camera now official

this post is created by aisha

Samsung’s NX series was aimed to integrate a DLSR-sized image sensor with the Samsung’s Compact Digital Cameras. However, the APS-C image sensor was somewhat larger than its counterpart found in the Micro Four Thirds. Modifications were made to squeeze the image sensor into an interchangeable lens body. The mirror-less body was smaller than the original DLSR-sized framework. It is quite noticeable that the rival Micro Four Thirds from Panasonic has been based on the above concept since inception.

Sony’s PS3 EyePet

this post is created by aisha

You might be a deadly finisher on PES, or an expert at nailing COD4 head-shots from half a mile, but how are your tickling skills? You’ll need them if you want to keep your EyePet happy. The monkey-like monster is the latest piece of Sony software to use the PS3 Eye camera. He appears on you TV screen, and as the Eye motion-tracks your movements near him, like petting or clapping, he’ll respond and interact. Remember the way you could poke and prod the magical creatures in Eye Of Judgment? It’s the same sort of tech, but used in a far more complex way.

iPhone 4G and iPhone OS 4.0 to be revealed next week?

As we all gear up to the Apple event next Wednesday (27th Jan), most are already certain that we’ll be seeing Apple launch their first tablet Mac aka iSlate / iTablet. However, some are speculating that this isn’t all that Apple may be hiding. The latest rumor surrounding this suggests a brand new fourth generation iPhone 4G may be unveiled as soon as next week or this coming Summer. Its analysis by various sites differs at the moment but some believe there will be an iPhone 4G on the basis of the latest revealed shots of iPhone firmware OS in version 4.0.
